I had the surgery last Wednesday, and the first couple days were rough... mainly due to the fack that I didn't eat/drink enough to settle my stomach acids which caused vomiting 3 times over 2 days. Not that bad overall.
The doctor recommended 2 weeks from work but I only took 1.5 weeks, which I am only 1/2 way done with now. If I had a light duty job I could have gone back in today, just kept myself hydrated and grazed all day as big meals are a no go right now thanks to the healing throat.
I thought the pain would have been worse than it is, I stayed on the recommended dosage of pain killers the day of and next day, but felt worse from the pain killers than without them. I just take 1/2 dose when I wake up to help until my throat loosens up from sleeping, and maybe right before I go to sleep. But otherwise it isn't that bad after just a few days. I can eat just about anything, just in small bites.
But it is supposed to be worse the older you are, so if you need it done the sooner the better... And I would suggest taking the needed vacation time from work, you will need it. But the more active I stay the better I feel, if I just lay on the couch with the pain meds I feel like crap. I might go weld up a new tailgate for my trailer today just to go work outside!
