i always seem to have trouble getting the mech fan off. to hold the pulley i use a loooooooooooong screw driver. (on the order of 2 feet to wedge between a couple of the bolts on the pully. (thats if putting the wrench on and giving it a quick wack with the hammer doesnt work)

added: the screw driver is square shaft not round, as the round will just slip.
