It is not a good idea to assume you know why the engine check light is on. You should check the OBD codes to make sure it is not something serious prior to resetting the light. Several online BMW parts places sell a OBD code reader that will allow you to reset the light (e.g. Bavarian Auto). IMO Anyone who is doing their own maintenance, even simple oil changes, should have one of these readers.
