Ah that really brings back memories. My first "car" was a Plymouth Suburban station wagon with a flat head 6 and a TWO speed push button automatic transmission (AKA a slush box). Many a time I stood on the gas pedal and punched the Drive (or Low) button. Not that it ever did much good. That tank would simply pull that flat head 6 to its knees and sedately ease off the line without even a chirp from the wheels
FWIW I think the abysmal quality of those old 50's era Chrysler 'automatic' transmissions is why, to this day, we don't have push buttons on the dash. Instead BMW fakes a gear shifter in the E70 that does EXACTLY the same thing but looks so much cooler, and gives you something inanimate to fondle while driving
