Couldn't agree with you more on tours. They get under my skin really fast.
Venice is definatly septic - last time I went there was a dead goat floating around next to our tour boat. However - there is soo much history in Venice - probably the greatest concentration of anywhere in the world, so history buffs should not miss out on Venice.
