Your MAF is giving bad information to the computer, hence why it runs badly w/ it plugged in. When you unplug the MAF, it'll hiccup for a second then run off base maps that are learned over time. You can read the codes all you want, but DO NOT have the codes reset until after you replace the MAF or else your computer will have essentially nothing to work w/ and run even worse that it is currently w/ the bad MAF. Cleaning the MAF is kind of a bandaid fix, so i'd start shoping online asap. I've seen them on ebay, Auto Parts at AutohausAZ - OEM Auto Parts - Discount Replacement Parts, Resources and Car Care Tips. If you're feeling adventurous, search on m5board.com for being able to spend around $80 for a VW MAF...I don't remember the part number, otherwise i'd be able to tell you what to get.
