Read the section titled "Diesel Particulate Filter" on page 139 of the owners manual. It describes how the 35d burns off particulates in the filter even if the engine has recently been shut down. Maybe this is what you are smelling.
FWIW We've never smelled anything with our 35d. But we're currently parking it in a well ventilated construction tent, while I'm building the 3 bay garage
