You might want to have a look at the Intravee II, its almost OEM in operation, and IMHO it is much better than the dice.

This is due to the fact that the OS has been hacked to do the alert and the OFF is the same as the on, except for the actual alert wav, so "on" plays the wav, "off" plays the empty tag holder (nothing), so turn the nav volume (in the set menu) to about half way and it will minimise the pause.
