It's the "load space divider" or "safety net". I got one of these way back - pretty handy when carrying bulky stuff in the back. It has 3 hooks that engage the tie-downs on the back of the rear sets just behind the headrests. Can be used with the seats foled down (net is full open) or with the seats up (net half open).

Hay Caramba! Let's put this thread to bed
. Here is a picture of the BMW load space divider that I had in my X5. I used it to keep my dog in the back. Please look carefully and notice where the divider is attached at the top corners into the recesses that are exposed when you slide those plastic covers back. The divider is very expensive, but extremely well engineered. Best to buy one used IMHO.
