Thanks for the advice. This 30 sec reset does the trick. In my case it had immediate effect in the first couple of days. Then the hiccup (2nd to 1st gear) showing up again with less rough pattern. Wondering if this is BMW product issue, or the trany getting too old (100K miles). Seems a lot of people having this problem.
