Glad you weren't hurt.

Even though it seems that the 2x4 didn't hit anything but the tire, you might want to check the undersides of your X5. The engine/oil pan is pretty well protected by a thick aluminum panel. But it can be bent (don't ask how I know). Behind that panel the various bits and pieces are somewhat protected but largely by plastic covers. They look like they were meant to reduce turbulence more than protect the tranny, exhaust etc. form anything serious like a 2x4. It doesn't take much impact to pinch a hydraulic line etc.
