Can't you just....ignore it

What happens if you get into a wreck and can't get to your phone for some reason. Ever watch that episode of The Office
YouTube - The Office- Michael drives into a lake! where Michael follows the directions from the GPS and it directs him to drive a road that dead ends into a lake...and he does what he's told! Imagine if he'd left his cellphone in the trunk.

At some point, common sense and differences of drivers security come into play.

Doesn't that defy the whole point of it? I'm more comfortable doing 80 driving down the highway looking at my screen nowadays than when I was in my 20's w/ a foldout map (remember the days of that being our only option) the same size as my interior and trying to remember which turn to take while flopping this huge sheet of paper around. I worked for a small construction company about 10yrs ago and we used mapbooks because GPS units we're as affordable as they are nowadays. It's much easier to find my way around glancing at the screen and/or listening to the car tell me when to turn than it is to flip pages in my lap while driving...stopping every 10 minutes in a 30,000lbs vehicle isn't exactly feasible and management would have my ass for how long I was taking.
Point is, these technologies are made to make out lives easier AND safer, but it's also takes common sense and discipline to operate them. IMHO, i'm a better driver still watching TV and doing 80mph on a roadtrip than some of the 16yr olds I see doing 30mph driving through my development or that 80yr old bag in the fastlane who doesn't know when to give up her drivers license in general.
Problem is we're so sue happy in the US and wanna tell everyone else what to do, but within our own comfort range. I can take my motorcycle to the track at MMP and hit triple digits on the straights. You on the otherhand may never want to ride a motorcycle and think they're absolutely dangerous and stupid. Ever sat in a Ford Focus then walked over to a Ferrari F40...not one stupid yellow
!!CAUTION!! sticker in the Ferrari about airbags, seatbelts, etc. But that's another soapbox.
As I said, at some point, common sense and differences of drivers security come into play. I'm absolutely comfortable with watching TV on roadtrips or doing 140mph at the track, so please don't impose your driving insecurities on others. Let the mature individuals decide, not you or BMW.
