Enlisted in the military shortly after high school when my father died in a car accident. Bootcamp in your neck of the wood from Jan-March, only saw one day of sun through all the deep snow...and on my last day too  Millington, TN for A School, Virginia Beach, VA for C School. Flown right out the USS America since they'd left before I finished school, then stationed at NAS Oceans when I wasn't out to sea. I was an F14 Plane Captain...basically a glorified maintenance chief. I always kept my secret clearance even after the military, which is what got me my job at Boeing on the F22. After the typical Boeing layoffs, its been real estate and construction ever since.
