I don't think anyone is comparing the overall driving experience of an M3 to an e53 X5, but if you are used to having power, the 3.0's acceleration may dissapoint compared to the 4.4i or higher. Just my $0.02.
I know performance isn't your main concern, but the facelifted 4.4i hits 60 in around 6.8 seconds. The 3.0 (auto) takes 8.6. That is nearly two seconds. If you don't think that is a big difference, keep in mind there is only about 2 seconds between your M3 and the facelifted 4.4i. So the difference between your M3 and the 4.4i facelift is the same as the difference between 4.4 and the 3.0. Just something to think about.
Personally, if you are going to lower it and put on larger wheels, just go for the sports package and buy a winter set up. My 02 4.4i with 100k miles has the original sport package shocks still on it and it rides just fine.
