Hi, I speak from experience, before you hand over any money, have a PPI done either by the dealer if they are respectable, or an independent preferably someone who knows BMWs. It will cost you about $125 but well worth it. Look for tears in the front CV joints, if torn most likely the CV joint will need replaced. Have BMW run the VIN and see what service work has been done. Some dealers used to give a new buyer the entire service history but in the last year BMW put a stop to that. A good service dept will verbally tell you anything and everything done and you can take notes. Look for unusual tire wear, unusual leaks, check for cracked belts and hoses. Good luck.
