Hmmm.
Well there are bearings in the struts, they rotate as you turn the wheel left and right. If they are gone you will get more of a clicking/knocking sound. But who knows. With these things there's bearings and attachment points everywhere.
My first BMW, so I'm still a little astounded by how much mechanical and electrical stuff they have crammed in these things.
