Guess what - it was the fuse! I'm assuming that the pump was frozen and therefore the current drawn was too high for the fuse. One 25A fuse later and hey presto! The fuse is a pain to get to - you need to remove front trim piece to get to it!

There's a very useful little card tucked in beside the rear fuse box that tells you exactly which fuse is which.
