I would think you need to sit back and just look out 3 yrs. Do you plan on having a Blu Ray? standard digital signal either with satellite or cable? or an HD signal?
Then compare the actual sets you are thinking about with the appropriate signal. Or as close as you can get. Technology has changed so fast on the LCDs, plasma not as fast. You could be watching a previous generation (or 2) set.

It's your TV. Match your signal with what you find appealling.
I'm very happy. Standard dvd's blow me away without even going to BR. The difference between BR and dvd is negligible most times. Especially considering non HD source material. (Philips 1080p)
