I have seen this problem come from two different causes.

1. The CCFL lamp in the LCD has reached its end of life (get a new LCD)
2. The DC-DC converter on the main board has failed (most common cause).

Open it up and take a look for burnt bits. They are obvious to the those who have a sharp eye!

Finding the replacement part is the challenge.
