Maybe I got the terminology wrong - my apologeez.

I rephrase....I have a concern that the big shiny metal thingy behind the grille might cop a pounding by rocks or some large nasty bugs on a country trip.

With a bike you would put a radiator guard over the front, normally made of some type of mesh.
Before doing this with my X5 i thought I'd ask the wider community if they already have something in place - no use reinventing the wheel I say.

Thanks anyways. I'll post a DIY when I make the 'shiny metal thing behind the grille' guard.
