I wouldn't worry too much about the quality of the Alpine changer as they're built rock solid. Most problems that you would most likely encountered (noises, etc...) are due to the converter interface itself. I've heard complaints about both, Blitzsafe as well as Soundgate. But I have to say that for the 2 years that I have my Alpine/Soundgate set-up, no problems to complain about (well...may be the text thing is a minor gripe).
To answer some of your questions:
1. I have the Alpine CHA-S634 changer with the soundgate adapter and that setup is working great for me. The quality of the Alpine changer should be as good if not better than OEM (the OEM changer is also made by Alpine).
5. At this time, getting MP3 ID3 tag onto the screen isn't possible. But someone is working on a solution, though. Check out this link =>
