I have only had my X5 since August, so I am not as familiar with all the particulars like many members. But, I had a "BRAKE" light just under the temperature gauge in mid-December. The car is still under factory warranty. My service advisor told me it was time for new brakes and that I had roughly 1500 miles left on the pads, etc. I brought it in a week later and they replaced the brakes.
