No you don't need the flares (assuming you're running a front 10" wheel and not the 11" oem rear), the 275/40's fill the wheel well perfectly on the rear wheels. Definitely do not need the flares with the 275/40's. In fact I have the 275/40 winter set on my sport 4.8i that does have the flares and had to add 30mm spacers to restore the factory look (without the spacers the rear wheels were set too far back).
