Yes there are oil separators on petrol. Youtube has videos of smoke after a broken oil separator. You are right, it looks like a smoke screen laid down from an Abrams tank

I don't know about the UK, here in the U.S. I have found taking car to a local college where they repair your car in a class room setting. Worth a try, maybe.
