For those who think it's turbo lag... the lag that occurs when you're at low speed then try to accelerate (such as when slowing down for a turn then mashing it)... this occurs on a 3.0si (and I'm sure 4.8i) as well... and I've heard of it on M3s. So it's not just turbos or diesels. Same with the acceleration from stop. What I'd like to hear is which BMWs from recent history DON'T have this problem.
