Yes, this is what I too mentioned. Many are confusing the systems multiple stability control systems for turbo lag.
The car has internal gyroscopes. It knows when your in the middle of a turn, and it knows when flooring it would result in a tail spin (FOR MOST DRIVERS).
For the rest of us, who are enthusiasts this can be annoying. Hence, you can turn of part of the stability control on the X5, but not completely.
If BMW tuned their computers to be over aggressive with their throttle retardation, I won't complain with that statement.
But, again, I don't believe what some of you are experiencing is turbo lag.
The only way you can really find out what the turbo-lag is on the vehicle, is to find a dry piece of pavement. Turn off the Traction Control, and floor it.
You may get some wheel spin or a chirp from the rear, but you'll also notice the turbo lag may be less than what you remember.
Though, testing turbo lag, from a stop when making a right hand into the flow of traffic is a very bad test. I've done the same thing with a 911 Turbo, and the vehicle nearly shut down, until it figured out it was not in an uncontrolled spin, and it was "okay" for the vehicle to allow full power to me, the driver at the time.
That incident had nothing to do with the Turbo, but with the onboard stability systems.
I'm not saying there is ZERO lag. I'm not sure of any vehicles, save for maybe the Bugatti Veyron (correct my spelling) that have imperceptible lag. But, unfortunately guys and gals, this is not a a sports car. It's not your average SUV or SAV for that matter, but there is going to be "some" lag.
Quite honestly, there's no car that I've ever driven that's been turbo-charged that has been so finely tuned that I've not been able to notice lag. Some have more lag than others, but the 35d is far from the point where it should be generating the level of complaints that some are bringing up here in this thread.
It's just simply not that bad, and is on par with many current production vehicles, including real sports vehicles, that I've driven in recent times.
