If your X is sitting out into traffic a little (say in an alley) and you want to make sure it is seen and not run into in the dark, you can turn on the parking light bulb for just the right side or the left. All other lights will remain off.
To do so, after removing the key, move the turn signal lever in the direction of the side you want to be on.

This freaked me out!!!
I just got my X5 on 30 December so many things are new to me. I was cleaning out the interior and did not notice that I had moved the turn signal lever. When I was done cleaning out the inside, I closed all the doors and began to pack up the cleaning supplies. I looked back and noticed the lights on the right side were on (dimly lit). I thought it was just the sun, but looked closer. I was getting a little upset thinking it was an electrical problem and now I would have a dead battery. I got in, put the key in the ignition and turned; the signal came on!!! I was so relieved!!!!
