When running up to Tahoe the CHP requires everyone carry chains, but it's generally agreed that by the time chains are required on 4 wheel drive, everyone is stopped anyways.

By the way, I'm running Pirelli Scorpions, which I believe is the best compromise for the 2% snow conditions my X5 sees.
What model of Z chain do you have? I couldn't get their Z575 onto the rear 285s (I couldn't button up the last hook...needed about 2 more inches in cable lengths). I tried moving the car forward and backward. I even tried jacking up the car...still no dice. Their next size up, the Z579, were too loose fitting.
