4 quarts inside of 5k is pretty steep.
Many years ago (1989) Sabaru USA told me that 2 quarts per 800 miles was "within industry standards". Needless to say my Sabaru was sitting on a used dealers lot within a week!
As to usage in a 2001 3.0L X5. I find very little use between 7500 mile changes using Royal Purple Synthetic. The only time it moved a little was when I needed a VC gasket.
