1. The DEALER is replacing the DME, or that is what they TOLD your wife over the phone.
2. WHo knows if or what BMW has recommended, if anything at all.
3. What was on your actual paperwork? Did you or the wife look at that or did it just get signed and turned back to the dealer for submission to BMW? (The owner has to sign off on warranty work, but dealers often try to keep that stack of paperwork 'in house'.)
4. I've seen no TSBs or service bulletins for replacing the DME.
5. Dealers (SAs) just make stuff up based on their own ignorance and their perception of the client's knowledge....
Let us know the part numbers on the work order showing what parts were replaced.
