Update..I picked up the X at the dealer....averything appears to be perfect after driving it about 75 miles and starting and stopping it a dozen times. So I'll buy the bad fuel diagnosis for now.....they did check all the usual possibilities and documented it so I'm happy about that.

On a happy note...I did get the use of a brand new 325i for a week - no charge, the dealer filled the X's tank with premium - no charge, it was very well cleaned in and out - no charge, and it got the NYS Inspection I had origionally requested - no charge!!
