I've seen on this forum before someone do just what you described, a homemade box with the square kicker (although they may nave used the L5) with the door cut out with a screen cover mounted to it. I haven't seen anyone do a 12" in the side panel with much success yet simply due to the airspace and mounting depth available. Though I have seen 12" or bigger flush mounted in the spare well of a 3.0i since it din't have the air suspension.

I think if you do a custom built ported box you may be able to do a 12" depending on mounting depth available, but that would likely stick you with a lesser quality sub as far as available excursion due to mounting depth. The 10" is more doable and there are a couple good threads about home made boxes with many pics and dimensions.
