The technology to paint plastic has been around for decades, and other vehicles on the market have similar surfaces that don't see wear like this at 20 thousand miles let alone 2!

There is no excuse for this on a production BMW, they have testing engineers that should be on top of this.

If it did 'slip through the cracks' so to speak, I would expect them to repair the piece and apply a clear shield under warranty, or replace the trim with black plastic.
