Well, I myself have been happy with the I6 and only went that route after calling a few shops around and asking specifically for maintenance/repair situations and costs, and they all collectively said go with I6 for less trouble and lower costs of ownership.

Now, I never thought I would like X5 as much as I have, so didn't matter to me then. (thought I would sell/change it in a year or two.) But now, I really wish I had gone with a V8 myself... just to have that extra power when/if I need it.

I have actually been looking around at Craigslist listings of 2006 X5 4.4i, but frankly I can't justify giving up my car and adding $5-9k to it to get an equivalent X5 in 4.4i engine. Well, even if I could justify that... my car is now running so flawlessly and almost everything (brakes, some cooling hoses, battery, etc.) have been changed already and are good for another 2-3 years, that I am worried to get out of it and into a 4.4i, only to find similar/more problems with that one to fix.

So, if I were to do it all again, I would definitely look at a 4.4i 2006 with about 40k miles or so on it, and also get some extended warranty on it.

For now, I will have to live with my I6 (very adequate for my purposes) and think about getting into a newer X5 35d in near future.
with the maintenance schedule and work you just put in. I read somewhere though that the X5 is more like a hobby than a car . Whenever you get bored with your great running X, then its time to get another canvas to work with.
