I suspect this is how BMW will wean us from their Eco diesel credit by keeping the new update at a similar price to the 3.0d sans the credit.

My apologies for being pedantic but your post is confusing. The E70 diesel currently sold in the US is the 35d, not the 3.0d. The 3.0d designation refers to the single-turbo diesel used in the E53 and initially for the single-turbo diesel in the E70 although that designation was later changed to 30d. Neither the 3.0d nor the 30d have been sold in the US. Likewise the 40d is not a 4.0d. In some markets the 35d was also initially called the 3.0sd. All of these engines, 3.0d, 3.0sd, 30d, 35d and 40d are all three-litre. I also believe that the proposed tri-turbo 45d is also a three-litre engine.
Again, my apologies for being pedantic it's just nice to be all singing off the same song sheet.
