OK. Now I'm really confused*

Somehow BMW, Apple or moi have managed to screw things up even more than usual

When I plugged the iPhone into the BMW adapter cable today....
1 - our X5 would charge the iPhone
2 - but the sound system complained that it couldn't find any compatible media and refused to play any of the music
3 - and the sound from EVERY iPhone app played via the X5's sound system, including the music in the iPod app

Has anyone else had this happen?

Frankly I prefer it working this way but... I'd like to know how/why it happened.

Background: the X5 & iPhone are my wife's. She only uses the BMW adapter cable to charge her iPhone. And we rarely listen to music when we are together in car. On longer trips the iPhone is usually attached via the USB port and the longer Apple cable to keep it charged while my wife uses it in her lap for navigation, checking the weather, etc.. IOW we have almost zip experience with using the BMW iPod adapter cable to actually play music.
