Would love to be able to hook up my iPod direct into the head unit. No stereo place here in Tampa I've tlked to seems to know how to do this install!

What exactly do you want to do?
If all you want is to pipe the audio output from the iPod into the head unit then what you want is the BMW Aux Input Kit. Look at the main page
http://www.xoutpost.com/ in the STEREO section, item 19 for the installation instruction for this. Once this unit has been installed you will have an additional item on your menu called "AUX" as you cycle through the "MODE" button (you currently have radio, tape and CD as options). While in AUX it will take the input and pipe through the head unit. You can press presets 1 through 6 to adjust the input gain to the head unit. Note that with this setup you will need to change tracks via the iPod itself. The only steering wheel control that is function using AUX is the volume.
On the other hand, if you want complete integration into your system, including steering wheel control of the tracks and display of the song tags on your nav display, then the solution I referenced above is what you want to check out.
