Umm... Maybe a little math will help.

If we assume that the BMW 19/26 city/highway mpg claim is 100% accurate. And your driving mix is 50% City and 50% Highway the AVERAGE would only be 22.5 mpg.

At 30/70 it climbs to 23.9 mpg
At 25/75 its 24.25 mpg
And even at 10/90 its still only 25.3

IOW it would be nearly impossible to get much better than a long term average of 25.3 mpg, unless a 35d was used almost exclusively for road trips. Even then you have to stop for diesel every 500 miles or so. And some wusses even stop for food, lodging, etc. even though it reduces their avg mpg

I'll post an updated graph RSN that show that my long term average mpg is still getting better, even though we're still regularly using the 35d for towing.
