If they install the new R6 6-pot for the 2006 year, it will no longer be sluggish. I expect 60MPH in the mid 7s with the new engine.
The current X3 is a little slow. I mean, the X5 3.0i does 60MPH in 8.8 seconds, whereas the X3 does it slightly faster at 8.3 seconds. But there is over a 500 pound difference. I thought the X3 could have been faster...
