I believe Canada uses the less costly, older system which simply measures relative rotational speed to detect when the effective diameter of a wheel/tire changes. No special sensors are needed, as the ABS and traction control system already have wheel speed sensors in-place.

The U.S. measures the actual air pressure using the in-the-wheel sensor.
