You can't consider the crude diesel engines here. For one, they are heavy-duty, so NVH isn't too big of a concern. As far as technology and milege go, the Europeans and Honda really are good at it. Check out Honda's iCTDi, when tested, a production European Accord (Acura TSX sold here) got 92mpg with this engine and set speed records:
