You should consider rescuing a grown dog.

Good points Juan, I've considered it, but have been hesitant because of possibility of behavioral problems that might have implications to my 3 youngins. I know that sounds a little selfish but not sure I want to chance any mysterious quirks to deal with and an adult dog will not have as many years to share with the kids as a puppy would. But who knows we may just find the pefect pet in an adult.
