The 3.0's tend to burn quite a bit of oil. Seems like a quart every few thousand miles isn't unusual.
Not to change the direction of your thread, but, 10,000 mile oil change intervals are not ridiculous. They can actually go to 15,000 miles with oe filters/quality oil and have been doing so successfully for over a decade now. How many failed BMW engines have you heard about where the cuase was the oil?
