Yes there is. Over here in the UK you can buy a small relay that is simply wired into the conector of the heater and onto a 12v supply. With the relay comes a remote control which you use to switch the live supply via the relay to the heater. But as you said being in queensland you will never need it,over here its currently -2 so cold.
