I have been thinking that it would be worth having a nice city bike, something for commuting and the off season. I am imagining a steel frame, 700-28 or 32 tires, drop bars, an Alfine 11 speed IGH, a Gates carbon drive belt, Avid mechanic disk brakes, a Brooks saddle, full fenders, a rear rack, and a dynamo hub with lights. This would be an ultra-low maintance bike. The hub has just been released, 409% range, oil bath. The belt will restrict frame choices, as the frame needs a cutout to get the belt into the rear triangle. Not sure if I would have to build this up, or buy something close and change components as necessary.
Also reading about studded tires for bikes. Not sure I want to go that far though.

Sounds like a good time wrenching on the bikes!!! I like the sound of your commuter bike ideas. I love the idea of a belt driven bike vs. chain. Talking about chains. I just put a new chain on the Cervelo. I love how crisp new chains feel!!!
My buddy was in Victoria the other week. He took his bike with so he could keep up on his training. The pictures of his rides were pretty dramatic. Riding in snow, ice, sleet, rain, mud etc...... Some extreme road riding for sure! Needless to say his bike has been completely taken apart and cleaned since his return home.
The riding in Phoenix has been absolutely great lately. For the cold weather I have been using some of Rapha's Embrocation cream. You rub it on your skin and it keeps you warm. I definitely recommend it. But be aware that after this is on your hands, what ever you touch on your body will get very warm! So, chamois cream first haha.
