Quite a few people have success with them. They're as safe as any others. The only danger, as I see you're from NYC, is how easily they damage. Forged wheels like OE, take a lot more abuse. They are stronger but doesn't mean they're indestructable. Lots of folks have damaged/bent/cracked OE wheels.

From experience of driving in NYC day in and day out as a young buck chasing tail in my E36 coupe, i'd stick with OE or at least a properly forged aftermarket wheel. With this selection, you get what you pay for. Although I have heard that even HREs bend pretty easily in NYC.

I'd also have to mention that how much meat you have wrapped around them plays a big factor. I wouldn't hesitate going aftermarket replica with my 17" and a 65 sidewall. With 20" and a 45 sidewall, not so much.
