I would definitely get the screen, instead of the whole unit. It is easy to replace, no soldering needed, especially if you are the curious handy type of person.
However, if we are talking about a dead LCD (went blank out of a sudden, not dead pixels or anything), I would rather check the LCD inverter. It is cheap to repair and it is usually the culprit for LCDs going blank. The matrix itself rarely goes completely blank.
