Coils don't usually fail in pairs, so I'd clear the faults then drive it until it happens again too see what cylinder is currently dropping out. Then if you want to isolate it to the component responsible swap the coil to a different cylinder to see if the fault follows the coil or stays in the same hole.

wow, quick response...thanks guys.
the SES light comes on maybe 20 seconds after warm up.
I don't know about the X5, but on my e46 i had 2 bad coils at once.
I will try the reset/manual process you suggested.
PS - is coil 1 at the radiator or firewall?
