BMW's use code hopping type security with their ignitions and a chip needs to be in the car. With that said however, there is the option of using the plastic valet key and "disconnecting" (read:break) off the shaft portion of the key. That way, even if it is located, it cannot be used. There are universal key-bypass kits available that require you to place the key in the box and wrap a wire around the ignition. I have found another way around this involving a $10 part, a relay, and the key. I'm hoping to install my remote start/alarm this weekend.
