Unhappy Engine blew up after 130 000 miles. Any ideas?

My 4.6iS engine died on the frozen highway (-4 F) doing 55 miles/hour. All of a sudden just blew all oil out and stopped. Now I know that my bimmer is not exactly brand new, but still this was my worst nightmare come true. I had just recently bought it, serviced it etc. and now I hear that engine canīt be repaired. All is wrong with "downstairs" eg. crankshaft, bearings etc. gone. What could be the cause of this?

I have no idea, but I would certainly expect V8 engine to go much further, when properly serviced. One suspicious thing, though. Before the trip I was trying to operate the internal heater with timing functionalities, without much success. Could this have been turned on during the drive and trigger events of damage done?

Thnx in advance for any suggestions and greetings from Finland.
